Thow Chiang enjoyed being a peer tutor when he was a college student. He found himself particularly good in explaining mathematical concepts in peer language. While serving national service with Singapore Armed Forces, he took up several tutoring assignments through peer referrals. Most of his students achieved outstanding results and are still referring students to him today.

Tutoring Experiences

Upon entering university and subsequently into workforce, Thow Chiang was active among youth, contributing his part as volunteer tutor to help them in academic study. Over the years, he has developed unique assessment and teaching techniques for students with wide-ranging backgrounds. He is able to quickly profile the mathematical skills of a new student and give accurate advice on the appropriate entry point for greatest improvements.

Thow Chiang tutors students either one-to-one or in small group. He had tutored more than 600 students from more than 80 schools, ranging form upper primary to upper secondary, from Normal to Express stream. He constantly promotes mathematics skills through understanding, memorization and practices. He is especially gifted in making complex concepts simple for systematic teaching.

Academic Mentor

Academic mentoring is not confined to classroom

Over years Thow Chiang becomes more an academic mentor than tutor. He goes beyond simply teaching enough for student to pass the grade. His connection with students is not only in academic studies but also in helping them to achieve overall academic excellence. As academic mentor, his interest is to enable students to see higher goals as they move through their educational years. He provides encouragement, advice and assistance to students to excel academically, spiritually, mentally, emotionally and socially.

Qualifications And Professional Experiences

Thow Chiang is an engineer by profession. In his engineering careers, he found numerous opportunities to develop his teaching skills to further his passion on teaching. For several years he worked as Information and Communication Technology (ICT) trainers, travelling to developing countries to provide ICT certification training

Today he is still very much in touch with telecommunications and engineering development. He provides freelance consultancy on technology projects and spend much time developing web and blog sites. His technology projects are mostly networking related, ranging from System Network Architecture (SNA) to VoIP and mobile technologies.

Interests And Hobbies

Ruth Goh is a trained teacher with Singapore NIE (National Institute Of Education), majoring in Chemistry and Mathematics. She is married with 2 girls. She was a full time teacher with ACS (Independent) for 5 years and a year with Anglican High before she became a homemaker. Today, Ruth is still actively involved in the teaching profession, doing ad hoc relief in secondary schools as well as giving tuition at home. In her own words: “I enjoy teaching – making concepts clear to students and helping them to be confident to apply and tackle questions through reinforcement.”

Qualifications And Professional Experiences

Ruth developed strong interest in mathematics since secondary school days and chemistry in JC days. She graduated from the National University Of Singapore with a Bachelor Of Science degree. She did Chemistry and Mathematics in the 3 years and also did Economics and Computer programming and Application in the first two years of her studies.

Ruth believes a lot in developing oneself in all aspects. On top of her Diploma in Education, she also has a graduate diploma in Business Administration. During her teaching years in ACS, she also obtained Fitness Instructor’s Certificate and Certificate of Proficiency in English.

Living Her Passion Fully

Ruth was active among youths in her younger day serving as a Sunday School Teacher in church. She considers herself not bright but a hardworking student which helped her excel academically. This is one strong encouragement she always gives to her students. Besides helping them in academic, Ruth constantly encourages the youths to identify their passion and devote whole heartedly to it.

Ruth is always known by many to be a person living her passion fully. In her younger day, her strong passion in music led her to form a band, playing guitar and performing with friends who share the same passion. They practiced regularly over weekends and performed at special occasions frequently. She learnt how to sing in parts and to focus intently on her individual part in group singing. Ruth always remembers the experiences in the band as they were her greatest moments. As the saying goes, “Dancers are great not because of technique; they are great because of their passion.”

Interests And Hobbies

Ruth is an outdoor person. In her younger days, she jogged regularly with a group of runners and participated in marathon. She enjoys doing sports like tennis, table tennis and jogging. She loves travelling too. She loves trekking, mountain-climbing, water-rafting and any activities that brings her close to nature.

Joanne has been a Math tutor for more than 15 years, specializing in secondary Math with O-level and N-Level students. Joanne loves Math since young and she even did all her electives in Math when pursuing her Degree in Economics and Sociology.

Working With Youth

Joanne was involved in youth works since she was a student. She taught in the TOUCH Youth Learning School and conducted Enrichment Programs in secondary schools on Youth Learning, covering DISC, Study Skills, Mind Map, Stress Management, Service-Learning and many more. Her strong passion in youth work led her to become a professional math tutor as it gives her opportunity to bond with youth. She delights in using her interests to turn math learning into something enjoyable and motivational.

Joanne takes strong interest in seeing her students succeed. It is her belief that by tutoring, she is helping a youth to acquire knowledge that can lead to major life changes through higher education. Joanne constantly discusses the improvements and with her students and their parents regularly to ensure that they are fully aware of their progress and make necessary adjustments accordingly.

An Experienced Math Tutor

Over last 15 years Math in Secondary schools had gone through significant changes. Math tutoring has become more challenging over the years as it requires one to be familiar with the syllabus changes in order to handle students from different schools of different syllabus. Unlike the younger counterpart who is able to handle only Singapore syllabus, Joanne’s wider exposure allows her to teach all Secondary Math covering Express stream Math, Normal stream Math and International Baccalaureate (IB) Math.

A Keen Learner And Traveler

Joanne is herself a keen learner, always seeking ways to improve herself and acquire new knowledge. She attends Japanese classes and travel widely.
