
Thow Chiang enjoyed being a peer tutor when he was a college student. He found himself particularly good in presenting mathematical concepts systematically. While serving national service, he took up several tutoring assignments through peer referrals and the students achieved outstanding results. To date Thow Chiang had tutored students from more than 100 schools. He always starts every student with math fundamentals and helps them to build confidence and enjoy math, irrespective of the student’s math background and competency.
Tutoring Singapore Math
Thow Chiang’s students come from both Singapore schools and International schools, doing math program ranging from Express Math, NA (Normal Academic) Math, NT (Normal Technical) Math, Elementary Math, Additional Math, IP Math, IB Core/Additional Math, IB SL Math and GEP (Gifted Education Program) Math.
He has developed unique assessment and teaching techniques for students with wide-ranging backgrounds. Whatever math a student is taking, Thow Chiang knows well the important concepts and common mis-concepts in each math topic. As he drills the students through these topics, they naturally become more confident and eventually excel in math.
Academic Mentor

Thow Chiang works actively among youths in his church and the neighborhood through his professional tutoring ministry. His approach is to be more an academic mentor than tutor so as to go beyond teaching enough for students to pass the grade.
Thow Chiang helps students not only in math study but also in achieving overall academic excellence. His interest is to enable students to understand the education system and to achieve higher goals as they advance through their educational years. He provides advice, encouragement and assistance to students to pursue academic excellence.
IP Math And IB Math
IB and IP programs are relatively new in Singapore schools with curriculum more advanced then Cambridge O-level. Singapore IB and IP math includes advanced topics that are taught only at Junior College level. Thow Chiang is able to quickly profile the mathematical skills of an IB or IP student and give accurate advice on the appropriate entry point for greatest improvements.
Thow Chiang has tutored IB and IP students from ACS Independent, SOTA, Nanyang, Raffles, NJC and Hwa Chong. He also tutors students from international schools, such as UWC, OFS, ISS, ACS International and SJI International.
Hobby And Interest
Thow Chiang was in engineering for many years, specializing in telecommunication and data networking. For some years he was also Information and Communication Technology (ICT) certification trainer in several developing countries. Today, Thow Chiang’s is still reading widely on ICT subjects and is conversant with latest technology gadgets.
Thow Chiang also takes part regularly as volunteer to places where he can serve with a purpose. One such trip was to China Sichuan shortly after May 2008 earthquake to help as translator with international medical and relief team working in remote villages.
Ruth Goh is a trained teacher with Singapore NIE (National Institute Of Education), majoring in Chemistry and Mathematics. Ruth was full time teacher with ACS (Independent) and Anglican High before she became fulltime homemaker after her second daughter was born. Yet she was still actively involved in the teaching profession, taking up relief teaching in secondary schools as well as giving private tuition at home. Through her contacts with schools and students, Ruth is constantly in touch with Singapore education system. Most importantly she is able to continually do what she loves to do. In her own words: “I enjoy teaching – making concepts clear to students and helping them to be confident to apply and tackle questions through reinforcement.”
Ruth was active among youths in her younger day serving as a Sunday School Teacher in church. She considers herself not bright but a hardworking student which helped her excel academically. This is one strong encouragement she always gives to her students. Besides helping them in academic, Ruth constantly encourages the youths to identify their passion and devote whole heartedly to it.
Joanne has been a Math tutor for more than 15 years, specializing in secondary Math with O-level and N-Level students. She has worked with students from many different schools having different programs such as IP and IB. Joanne loves Math since young and she even did all her electives in Math when pursuing her Degree in Economics and Sociology. She is strongly motivated to pass on her passion and knowledge in Math to her students.
Over last 15 years Math in Secondary schools had gone through significant changes. Math tutoring has become more challenging over the years as it requires one to be familiar with the syllabus changes in order to handle students from different schools of different syllabus. Unlike the younger counterpart who is able to handle only Singapore syllabus, Joanne’s wider exposure allows her to teach all Secondary Math covering Express stream Math, Normal stream Math and International Baccalaureate (IB) Math.
